Modernism

Cardedeu

Cardedeu is located in the centre of the valley depression, in the lowest part of Cànoves’s watercourse which goes across the town. It is a strategic point for communicating roads between Barcelona and Girona and this fact has marked its historical development.

Documented from the medieval times, Cardedeu became a town in the thirteenth century when King Jaume I gave it the designation of territory with mayor’s office. But the transformation of Cardedeu into a modern town took place at the end of the nineteenth century when the railway was built in1860 and the regional road in 1865. The town grew around these new road and rail in a unique style with magnificent modernist houses for summer holiday-goers from Barcelona, which at present define the town as a residential one. It is worth highlighting the houses along the road, especially Torre Gual or Montserrat by the architect Balcells and l'Alqueria Cloelia, and in the centre of the town, the houses Arquer and Golferichs by the municipal architect M. J. Raspall.
