The Barcelona bourgeoisie made summer holidaying fashionable at the turn of the twentieth century, that is to say, a private box in the Licieu and a summer house in Cardedeu. These were families seeking cool summer refuge in a splendid mansion. Many of these mansions, which were commissioned to architects of renown, can still be found in Cardedeu, la Garriga, Figaró - Montmany and l’Ametlla. Lots of these buildings are centred around one distinct name - Manuel J. Raspall, one of the pioneers of Catalan Modernist architecture. The group of four buildings which make up the Illa Raspall in la Garriga constitutes his most important work.
